On the Whydonate platform there are only campaigns for charities that are worthwhile. We understand very well that as an initiator of an action you believe that ‘your’ charity should receive the most donations. That is why we have put a number of tips & tricks on this page for you, in order to make successful fundraising easier. You do not just collect donations. For fundraising successes you first have to convince enough donors of the necessity of donating to your charity.
Tip 1: The importance of a good story
You don’t just start a fundraiser for a good cause. You only do that if you are convinced yourself that this fundraiser is worth it. By starting a fundraiser, you actually want others to share your opinion, to facilitate collecting donations.
Make sure that you share as much information as possible. Be thoughtful in completing your profile and do not forget to upload some relevant photos. Photos are important, they appeal to the imagination. Also tell your whole story.
Let the potential donors know why this fundraiser is so important and tell them what will be done with the money from the donations. People like to know exactly what will happen to their donation. That gives them a sense of involvement and allows you to fundraise successfully.
Trick: Do not hesitate and make a personal video of yourself, in which you once again explain why this action is so important. It can be done with your smartphone!
Tip 2: Do the first donation yourself
In general, donors are somewhat reluctant to be the first to make a donation. So give a good example and do the first donation yourself. Keep in mind when you determine the amount of the donation, you set the tone for other donors. Another good tip for successful fundraising! Donors have a tendency to join earlier donations.
Also remember to leave a message after doing your own donation in the ‘comment’ section, so that others can see who made the donation. This way you get a beautiful and especially interesting page that a donor will not easily ignore.
Tip 3: Prepare your fundraiser well
By approaching friends and family before you take your action online and ask them to support your cause, you can make a flying start. If you can find 10 to 15 donors for your action that are willing to make a donation on the first day, the chances are that your action will be a success.
The figures show that if you are at 80% within 5 days, you are 5 times as likely to get to 100%. Pages that get started slowly reach the 100% much less often.
Tip 4: Spread the word!
Let as many people as possible know that you started a fundraiser for a good cause. Motivate friends and family to share your page with everyone, after all, you don’t ask for yourself, but for the cause.
When everything goes without a hitch, chances are that you will also reach donors outside your ‘friends’ group. If they also start sharing your page again, you have a chance that your action will go really fast.
Make sure to keep everyone informed of the state of affairs and share weekly updates and your page via as many channels as possible, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.
You can also send out a press release, in the hope that it will be posted. Newspapers and other media are often charmed by free content. Depending on the target group you want to reach, you send it to the local or national media.
Trick 4: If you use Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp to share your promotion page, it is much more personal than other online channels.
Tip 5: The power of repetition
People are creatures of habit, they actually have to get used to everything first. Just think of a new song, which we only start to appreciate after we have heard it a few times.
The same goes for your action. Many donors will not immediately feel the urge to make a donation when they see a message about your action for the first time.
So if you want to collect donations, it is important that you use the power of repetition. You’d better not send the same message every time, but do this for example in the form of updates.
Trick 5: Thank you all your donors personally via the e-mail. Ask in that e-mail if they want to be so good to share your page with their network. Place ‘direct share’ links in the e-mail, so that it does not cost the donor much effort.
Tip 6: Online & offline
You can also look for potential donors for your action outside your online network. Just, offline. Check whether there are organizations or communities in your area that can help you with the fundraising. Examples of such organizations: Rotary, Lions Club and BNI.
Can they do nothing for you? Ask them if they would be kind enough to inform their network about your action. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Do not skip the local shopkeeper and the canteen of the football club. Maybe you can hang up a flyer of your action there.
Trick 6: Do you have something to celebrate? Instead of a gift, ask for a donation on your fundraiser page. Or ask if the gift may be the sharing your page with the networks of the generous donors!
